Dr. Adeya Richmond and doctoral student Jessica Jackson will discuss cultural considerations in integrated healthcare settings including: 

• Awareness and evaluation of health literacy
• Modifications to interventions that increase cultural effectiveness
• Cultural congruency between clinicians and clients 

Adeya Richmond, PhD, is a licensed psychologist and a research scientist at the University of Minnesota. Jessica Jackson, LMHC, is a 4th year counseling psychology doctoral student at New Mexico State University, minoring in Integrated Behavioral Health.

The APAGS-CARED virtual mentoring hour is for undergraduate students of color or those who will be applying to PhD/PsyD programs in clinical, counseling, and school psychology programs.

The goal of this online meeting is to provide information about how to choose a multiculturally-friendly doctoral program, especially with regard to race and ethnicity.

Participants will:

- Learn about program considerations that are salient to students of color (e.g., geography, culture, and climate);

- Increase awareness about different types of psychology programs, admissions criteria, and opportunities to study multicultural issues;

- Have the opportunity to ask questions to current graduate student of color; and

- Begin networking with other students of color that share similar advanced degree interests and career paths in the field of psychology.

Division 45 Research Conference Student Scholarship Information

Student Scholarships

A limited number of scholarships will be awarded to graduate students to cover a portion of their conference registration and housing costs. These scholarships are intended to increase graduate student participation in both the preconference and conference.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

The scholarship covers registration fees, and can also be used to cover travel expenses.

Who is Eligible?

All students who are currently enrolled in a psychology-related graduate program are eligible to apply. Accepting the scholarship commits the students to attending the entire preconference and conference. Although students are NOT required to be a presenter at the conference or a member of Division 45 to be eligible to receive the conference scholarship, those students who submit a proposal to present and who are members of the division will receive priority.

Students must complete and submit the on-line scholarship application form by April 15th at 11:59pm Eastern time.

Our section member and 2013 President, Dr. Alfee Breland-Noble has co-edited a new handbook: Handbook of Mental Health in African American Youth. The Handbook of Mental Health in African American Youth fills major gaps in the child and adolescent mental health literature by focusing on the unique challenges and resiliencies of African American youth. It combines a cultural perspective on the needs of the population with best-practice approaches to interventions. Chapters provide expert insights into sociocultural factors that influence mental health, the prevalence of particular disorders among African American adolescents, ethnically salient assessment and diagnostic methods, and the evidence base for specific models.
